Career Summary
Dr. Victor Galan’s career as a professional archaeologist includes more than 30 years of experience in the field, as an advisor, as a consultant, and in the classroom shaping new professionals. His research interests include spatial analysis, lithic microwear, and archaeological site formation. As Senior Archaeologist for Hydrex Environmental, Dr. Galan conducts online literature research; writes, edits and reviews Cultural Resource Management (CRM) reports for submission to National Forests and Grasslands in Texas (NFGT) and The Texas Historical Commission (THC); and provides artifact analysis based on the collection size and content for projects in Texas.
Prior to completing his Ph.D. from Texas A&M University in Archaeology with an emphasis in Geoarchaeology, Dr. Galan earned an M.A. in Archaeology/Anthropology from the University of Arkansas and a B.A. in Humanities with an emphasis in Archaeology from Stephen F. Austin State University. Dr. Galan taught a variety of anthropology classes and conducted field schools at Stephen F. Austin State University. He founded, owned and operated Deep East Texas Archaeological Consultants (DETAC) for 20 years. Through DETAC, he conducted a variety of pedestrian surveys, completed site testing for National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) eligibility, and managed data recovery excavations followed by artifact analysis, and Cultural Resource Management (CRM) reports which described the fieldwork and pertinent analysis as well as making recommendations pursuant of the National Historic Preservation Act for State and/or Federal review in Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Arkansas, and Oklahoma. Before joining Hydrex Environmental, Dr. Galan also conducted artifact analysis, archaeological report preparation, and provided CRM as part of Raven Environmental Services, Inc.
An avid participant in professional and community organizations, Dr. Galan serves as the Region 4 Director for the Texas Archaeological Society. He was appointed to the National Park Service Advisory Board in 2023 where he served on the National Historic Landmarks and National Register of Historic Places boards until 2025. He volunteers as a pen pal with aspiring professionals through Letters to a Pre-Scientist. He serves as Vice-Chairman for the Nacogdoches Mayors Committee on People with Disabilities which advises the mayor on issues important to people with physical and mental disabilities. Dr. Galan serves as treasurer the Friends of Caddo Mounds State Historic Site. The organization notably constructed a Caddo grass house under the supervision of a Caddo elder in 2016, which was replaced in 2022 following a destructive tornado. He also teaches workshops and leads tours of the site.
